The origins of BA can be traced back to the birth of civil aviation, those pioneering days after the first World War. A British Airways Board was established by the United Kingdom government in January 1972, after the passing of the Civil Aviation Act of 1971, to manage British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA). The management service functions of BOAC and BEA were combined under the British Airways Group in September 1972.
Alex Cruz, a Spanish businessman, was named as the next Chief Executive and and Chairman of British Airways on November 6,2015, to begin in April 2016. Cruz has a degree in Industrial Engineering from Central Michigan University, an MSc from the Ohio State University, and Business Management & Administration Degree from the Cox School of Business in Dallas. In 1995, he began his professional career at American Airlines. He became a partner at Arthur D. Little in 2000, before setting up his own aviation consulting firm in 2002. He founded a Barcelona-based airline, Clickair in 2006, merging the airline with Vueling in 2009 and becoming the company’s Chairman and CEO. Alex Cruz is a visiting lecturer at the IESE Business School in Madrid and the ESADE Business & Law School in Barcelona.
Its headquarters is located at Waterside, Harmondsworth, England. BA has 268 aircrafts flying to 183 destinations. London Heathrow Airport serves as its hub.
