IndiGo Airlines

A low-cost airline situated in Gurgaon, India. IndiGo is the largest airline in India by means of passengers carried, the airline operates to 41 destinations and is the second largest low-cost carrier in Asia. IndiGo was founded as a private company, in 2006. It took delivery of its first aircraft in July 2006 and commenced operations a month later. The company went public in 2015.

Origins and Ownership

IndiGo was founded as a private company in 2006 by Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal, a United States-based expatriate Indian.

Rakesh Gangwal is a former Chairman and CEO of US Airways Group from 2003 to 2007. He was born in India in 1953, and did his schooling from Don Bosco Park Circus, received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mathematical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Master of Business Administration degree from Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania.

Rahul Bhatia serves as the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo. Mr. Rahul Bhatia serves as Group Managing Director of InterGlobe Enterprises Limited. Mr. Bhatia was instrumental in the formation of InterGlobe Enterprises in 1989 with its flagship business of air transport management. It is under his able captainship that the InterGlobe diversified manifold. He has more than 25 years of experience in the travel industry. He has developed a number of travel-related new businesses. He worked for two years with IBM, and was involved in the pilot project to establish a fully automated screen manufacturing plant. He has been Non Executive Director of InterGlobe Aviation Limited since January 13, 2004. He serves as Director at InterGlobe Enterprises Limited. Mr. Bhatia holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
