Founded in 1919 by a young aviator lieutenant, Albert Plesman, KLM is the world’s oldest airline that still operates under its original name. In September 2003, Air France and KLM agreed to have a merger in which both companies would become subsidiaries of a company known as Air France – KLM. The European Commission and United States Department of Justice approved the proposed merger between the two airlines.
